Letter to the Reader

Dear Reader,

February is the month of second beginnings. The snow’s almost gone. Cold temperatures sweep past us and start to swing. I hear faint birdsong from my window.

February is also a celebration of Ramadan, Chinese New Year, Tết, Mardi Gras, Black History Month, and many other observances. There are Winter Olympics, GRAMMYS, and New York Fashion Week to discuss with friends and Super Bowl championships to spend time with family.

February brings us so many chances. This is a month of looking forward and cherishing our humanity.

Today is the World Day of Social Justice. At Between the Lines, we also offer a list of resources to inspire changemakers on how writing can drive social good. As we think about ways to support our community, we are deeply grateful for every artist that has submitted and contributed to our journal. Your story has given so much fruit to how we approach the world, and we are ready to listen. We thank our community, who is relentlessly advocating justice across environmental issues, gun control, educational opportunity, racial justice, disability awareness, food security, mental health, gender equity, criminal justice, human rights, and many more. We thank your contributions at  state parks, food banks, animal shelters, schools, soup kitchens, libraries, art organizations, historical institutions, and cultural museums that have positively impacted the lives of countless stakeholders.

I hope that this issue is one of the many hopes you carry from winter to spring.

Best,

Chelsea Zhu
